Sarchu district of Himachal Pradesh
Situated at an altitude of 14,500 ft, Sarchu is situated between Baralacha La Pass and Lachulung La Pass.Sarchu is an overnight stopover with tented accommodation on the Manali-Leh highway, on the border of Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh in India. It is nestled between the Baralacha La pass. It's height 4,290 meters. There is an Indian army camp situated on the banks of the Tsarap Chu river. During winters, this highway and high passes and the road gets blocked and camps are closed. This spot is a most popular trekking point in the Zanskar region of Ladakh.
Within the Himalayas, on the Manali-Leh highway, lies the serene point of Sarchu. If you're doing a road trip from Manali to Leh or heading up to Tso Moriri, you'll pass Sarchu. This is widely known as the mid point for those who is travelling to the Zanskar region. And also it offers a quiet scenic spot for camping in Sarchu. Due to the high altitude of about 14,500 feet Sarchu offers spectacular views of stark landscape with some small oasis-like spots around water bodies. This is a chance to escape the crowds of Manali or Leh during season time.
Sarchu is very high. It can be uncomfortable to camp there if you are not suitably acclimatised. Do take adequate precautions like drinking plenty of water, avoid smoking or alcohol. Try to break your journey at Jispa for one night before getting to Sarchu, and avoid any serious exertion. You can also talk to your doctor about starting Diamox before you are lleaving for your trip. The campsite has medical first aid and a jeep on standby for emergencies.
